The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a intense examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
