Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no new information.
